Historic coin
First issued in 1489, the sovereign was named after its magnificent portrayal of then monarch, Henry VII. Following a 200-year hiatus, the coin was revived in 1817 under George III as a circulating piece with a nominal value of one pound sterling (£1). Modern bullion versions are also issued in proof and other collector finishes.
Pistrucci’s masterpiece
Continuing a long-standing tradition, this half-sovereign portrays St George and the Dragon by Benedetto Pistrucci, the famous Italian medallist and engraver whose association with the Royal Mint spanned 40 years. Also included on the reverse is the coin’s 2024 year-date.
